Love the song. It's from an old Russian song about the potato famine.

I learnt this song in UW campus back in 1971, many years ago,I visited U district of Seattle , I standed in front door of that little cafe shop, and saw my reflection in the glass, can’t stop to tears…! What a great song which tells the whole life story!

The innocence of society continues to dissolves until we reach rock bottom. As Soddom and Gammorah. Then God intervenes and resets us. But we are Fallen and inherently Evil. We continue pursuing Sin and Satisfying our Flesh.

I don't know why but this song that I had listened to for decades started to make me cry. Maybe, I grew older?

Actually it was an old Jewish/Yiddish song from Lithuania. It's haunting and is eternal. Shlomo Ansky wrote it in Yiddish 1902. Boris Fomin to whom the Russian version is ascribed was only born in 1900!

Brittle style. Shrill voice. Thick pasty makeup. Nasty teeth. Repetitious lyrics.
