Some clarity here given some recent revelations… Apple claims the old batteries are incapable of meeting peak performance demands over time. The choice to reduce performance is apparently to avoid random device shutdowns. That said, why isn't this issue affecting other devices using similar battery tech? Are people using iPhone's longer? Either way the argument regarding lack of transparency remains. Here's the full statement from Apple,
Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices. Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components.
Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future.
They aren’t slowing down the phones it’s probably because the software is better optimised on the newer phones

Hopefully everyone realizes all phone companies purposely slow down your device, not just apple. They’re all very dishonest and buying a different phone wont change a thing.
Performance over battery
Apple is, at times, very tone deaf, and this arguably is what made this situation so bad. This wasn't really that bad of a thing in terms of the actions taken. The technical explanation for why makes sense, and I had an older phone with a weaker battery that would cut out randomly…this change fixed that issue, and this issue is being encountered partly because Apple's phones are well built, given long periods of software support, and owners tend to keep them for a long period that often exceeds the service life that current lithium cells can provide. The problem was Apple's lack of communication on the topic, and it was made worse by them completely and utterly NOT understanding why their lack of communication was a problem…they missed the bus on that one, and they dealt with the issue in a reactive way, when they could have taken a more proactive stance right from the start and achieved a better outcome. Even with completely pure intent, at face value they should have realized this looked like a closed door scheme to force people to buy new phones, and they should have communicated their intent and their justification from the start. Further, while iOS generally does strip down some user controls, this is one user option they should have recognized to include from the very start of this battery-based throttling.
The bottom line is that even a company with the level of influence and brand prestige of Apple does not get unlimited public trust. This hurt their reputation, and it hurt their sales of new phones. It could have been avoided with better communication and by not taking the 'we do no wrong' stance.

Am i the only one here in 2020? Anyway id choose performance over battery life cose you could always buy a protection/battery cover for tour phone. And theese days apps are heavy and performance is needed
Samsung does the same thing when you have your phone for too long they start sending you updates to slow down the phone You didn't ask for the update they force you to update the phone an update you might not like
