Your mileage may vary. I normally would go to an otologist (visits are free due to public healthcare in Germany, so it is not a money problem) and get my earwax removed, maybe once a year. But then again, otologists (at least in Germany) also care for ear/nose/throat issues (e.g. sore throat), and that's where you definitely don't want to go to in the middle of a pandemic, especially if you have to sit in a waiting room for > 45 minutes. When I started to feel that I had some build-up in my right ear, I first got a fluid from a pharmacy to flush it out (following the principle to always start with the least risky option). It worked partially. I would always recommend to try this first, even multiple times. Then I got the newest version of a similar video endoscope. 3 megapixels, good (but not great) lighting, exchangeable soft rubber/plastic tip, but fixed in position. No cable (connected via WiFi), so nothing that hinders your hand-movement. Video is displayed on a large iPad Pro and very crisp. I also got professional alcoholic swabs for sterilizing it upfront (and afterwards), which one should always do first. For the type of ear-wax I had – which was sitting in some space before my ear drum and had not been flushed out entirely – I was able to remove it with this endoscope. You shouldn't expect to go in and out in 20 seconds, but rather take it VERY slowly and VERY cautiously, also stabilizing the hand that holds the endoscope against your head, thus avoiding "accidentally" moving into the ear canal too deeply. The coordination of hand movement with the video you see requires some learning, but it is possible to get used to it. I agree that this is something I wouldn't use if earwax was sitting right at my eardrum (way too dangerous), but I also wouldn't call it the "least effective way". I certainly agree that there is a high potential of damaging parts of your ear, especially if people know hardly anything about the ear's anatomy. In that regard, I can certainly imagine that Doctor Cliff will see a number of patients hurting themselves, which made him shoot this video (I always assume best intentions). In non-Corona times, I will always prefer an otologist, but currently, devices like these used in a cautious manner can save you from having to go to a doctor's office – and potentially catching Covid-19. It really depends on the type (soft vs. hard), extent and position of the earwax.
Ill stick with professionals for this
No, sorry, I bought one of these enderscope and it works great.
Once I found the knack of using this enderscope I removed lots of earwax.
My ears are fine and no damage caused.
So disagree with you but respect you’re a professional
VERY helpful. Thanks. For a split second, I considered purchasing a tool like this. You disabused me of the impulse.
There's only one, little nit that I have to pick.
At numerous points throughout the video, you inexplicably substitute the word "outside" for the word "out." This leads to awkward constructions like "removing wax outside the ear canal," and "take wax outside the ear canal." However, I wouldn't need to remove earwax that is outside of my ear canal; it's only a problem when it's inside my ear canal! But, seriously, phrases such as "take earwax out of" and "remove earwax from" the ear canal are, well… much easier on the ears. Cheers.
got one of these for the hell of it. Not using it to remove anything but looking inside my ear and nose is interesting
There are better ones for sure, you should try the one with the spoon instead
I know this is old but I have pain in my ear for awhile I went in they said I have no ear infection or wax build up. It still hurts a little I try to find out what it is
Speaking from NHS land in UK, hard to believe there are doctors in usa willing to give free advice. Decent man!
All of these products are terrible.
The first one I purchased was too large at 8mm. The next one I got was 5mm and it worked fine. Now they have them down to 3.9mm and the tools provided have improved a lot. Most of the issues you raised have been taken care off.
Now you get plastic spoons covered in cotton.
As a kid an insect crawled inside one of my ears. Ever since then its quite satisfying to keep my ears clean without needing to visit a doctor every time.
It works. And it works well. Just buy the best one on ali express they are like 12$ and come as a kit. They even now have an attachment that prevents the end from moving.
I have suffered all my life……
It's disappointing that this video uses such mediocre tools, because the real conclusion here seems to be "using shitty endoscopes is dangerous" which would be true regardless of whether you're a trained professional or not
I have a question, for the past two years I have had issues with my right ear. It feels clogged all the time and my ear cracked/clicks when I swallow. (My left ear is fine). I went to the ears, nose and throat MD and they looked and there isn't any wax buildup and said it is allergies.
It bugs me so much that I feel like I need to plunge my ear. Ugh. Could this be my inner ear closing and opening with gunk?
Thanks.
Great video Dr. Cliff!
I've just bought one and only looked inside. I'm not even gonna attempt to remove any. I'll try drops first then if that doesnt work i will go to a professional. I do like using it though and it'll come in handy when changing a headlight bulb.
I don't know who to believe;
The Medical professional who demonstrated the product or the paid actors who didn't show what they were doing!
I would wanna see u try other ones that could potentially be the best bet because at the end of the day people r still gonna buy abd use em so why not give them the best option
I have an endoscope, similar to the one used in the video. I have no problem at all seeing and removing ear wax. I see a couple of issues with the way those in this video are attempting to remove ear wax:
1) They have not used the correct attachment – this job required a smaller curette. If it doesn't come with one, then buy a different kit.
2) The ear wax had been allowed to build up for months. If the woman is producing that much ear wax, she should be cleaning it every couple of weeks, which is easy to do if you have a device at home.
It’s very obvious to me that Dr Cliff, and the nurse with the ear wax, started out with a clear bias against these devices and were determined to prove it. They did not perform their ‘experiments’ with an open mind.
What is interesting to me is that Dr Cliff made no mention of THE NUMBER ONE DANGER of these devices, which is sterilisation. Unless you know how sterilise the curette, you shouldn’t be sticking it in your ear (and certainly shouldn’t stick it in one ear and then the other).
Thank you for this vid. I was going to buy one but you have changed my mind.
Nice teeths (no joking, I'd wish have those).
