I want the M-A's black chrome so badly on the MP haha, love the matte look, but I think I'm too much of a noob to ditch the meter
I have the Black MP! and I LOVE my camera so much!!!!!!!!! Great investment! it's true, it's super expensive, but once you shoot with it you're so happy! I've never had any regrets to have bought this Amazing camera!
You should also try an M3.. there's nothing else like it! 🙂
I love my m3 and m6
I don’t like luxury for the sake of luxury, and the communication around luxury irritates me a lot!
But I also think that analog Leicas are the best tools, and when their prices don't go crazy like the M6 for example, then it's worth it.
Nicos I understand why you prefer the M2 over the MP! I have a wonderful M4 from 1970-1971. It cost me «only» 700€, and I had it serviced completely for 350€. Now it’s as good as new. I had a M6 TTL before (wish I had waited to sell it when I see the prices now!😁), but I really prefer the M4. The main reason is the viewfinder. Before the M4-P the viewfinder was more accurate at working distances (2-3m), then the frame has been shrinked (so they could add the 28mm frame I heard…)
I also like the absence of the 75mm frame which disturbs the vision….
And I never liked the lightmeter on the TTL which ate too much battery… The Voigtlander VCII meter is as accurate and more battery efficient. And if one day it doesn't work anymore I'll be glad it's not part of the camera. I like the camera to be only mechanical.
I have an M2 and an M6.. I tend to use the M6 more, because of the meter, but every time I use the M2, It just feels so much better and makes me want to put another roll in.
I got an MP in January and have shot dozens of rolls through it. It's great. I wanted a vintage film Leica as well and ended up getting a IIIf – if you haven't shot a III series Leica, I highly recommend it. They are much less money than a vintage M and a different kind of shooting experience, esp if you don't like to shoot with a meter.

Do the silver chrome Leicas such as the M2/3/4 not brass? Obviously not like the black ones, but I thought they should still show off the brass layer after long enough.
I have had almost all leica M models you can have. My main camera right now: Zorki 3. When you have the zorki 3 or 4 serviced very well with new curtains and proper grease it works just as good as a leica. I know some people will disagree but as a camera technician I can say that most leicas are overrated considering the price of a zorki
The MP for me would be my, "I made it camera" haha. Loooove my M6, but there's something about that black paint and it brassing that is so f*&%ing cool. I love that your REWARDED with the brassing the more you use the camera. Love these stories episodes. Everybody is a camera nerd here, so we don't mind short little things like this. So thanks Nico!!
What a dork for brassing it artificially …
If it feels right, then it is the camera for you. If you buy a camera for status, well that is great and it supports the industry, but if the camera is not used it is a shame.
Great video man. I can't believe I haven't looked at more of your videos. I've been thinking of getting a MP for some time, but the M6 I have just performs so well. I think what many people underestimate is that a fully mechanical M3/M2 will serve you for ever. As long as there are spare parts, those cameras will work beautifully.
how do you meter ?
Clickbait video 😄
It's funny how that works. I love my M6 (which I know you don't like so much), but don't really like shooting with my M9 at all (which I inherited). I realize there's a film/digital thing going on with those, too, but I also shot with an M10 for a weekend, and loved shooting with it. But I can't afford one of those :(. To some all this must sound like crazy Leica nonsense, but the shooting experience really does play a big part in it–and not just with Leicas. You have to go with what you like using for hours/days/weeks on end.
What are "the best things in life"?
The M2 and the IIIg were the best they ever built. Very sad they are no longer available new.
I've got one of the most boring M2 variants as well. Lever rewind, silver finish, self timer, absolutely nothing special. Would I love to have a black painted one with no self timer? Sure. But I can shoot this one as I like and not care about how it looks or what happens to it. I don't have to baby it at all, top plate has some serious corrosion (was left on a shelf by the previous owner with the clip on light meter) and maybe I'll get it refinished in black enamel sometime but seriously, who cares? It'll look better for sure but it won't become a better camera by any means.
About that clip on meter, mine came with a working MR4. One unexpected experience I had with that meter is that it forces me to think of the exposure settings and how the light looks in the scene before I lift the camera to my eye. I was going through the same with my Rollei and Hasselblad but had never noticed that, probably because I never bring those to my eye, heh. The super clear viewfinder of M2 with no distracting paired frame lines with no exposure info underneath is more attractive to me than an MP, M7 or M6 because while I'm looking through the finder, all I have to care about is the composition and the moment. To me, this is what makes M2 so much more fun to use than most other cameras, including quite a few other Leica M cameras.
