At No. 5 is the surprise entry of M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening (with $64.5 million). Even being his first Rated-R film audiences were just curious about this nature gone amok film. It was an expensive misfire that even many of his fans didn’t bother with.

At No. 4 is Hellboy II: The Golden Army (with $76 million), which was well praised by fans of both the original film and the comic book with its mix of fantasy, horror, and adventure and had a huge array of monsters and misfits. Less a horror film, this new Hellboy film had many elements that appealed to the horror fan not the least of which was director Guillermo del Toro whose name alone warrants that audiences take a peek at what he’s conjured up next.

If you thought we were done with remakes than you are dead wrong as No. 8 is the remake of Prom Night (with $43.9 million) which was geared towards the teen crowd and because it opened close to Prom season this film was a hit with its target audience. Big on suspense with no gore was the rule of the day and even though it has its defectors (those who have seen the Jamie Lee Curtis original) there is no denying that it touched a chord with audiences.

Some of the better more expensive games include “Fallout 3” (wait for the Game of the Year Edition with extra content coming out this year), “Resident Evil 5,” “Bioshock,” “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune,” and “InFamous.” If you like singing AT ALL, get the PS3 Consoles edition of “Singstar” (bundled with microphones) and the PSEye USB camera (Trust me on this one!).

2008 was not a year for true horror films but a year for the more subtle story driven (and dare I say it) PG-13 horror films. Only a handful of true hard-core horror films were even released theatrically much less made this list as many of the most praised films had limited releases or went straight to DVD. This includes such films as Inside, Frontier(s), Teeth, Let The Right One In, Fido, Diary of the Dead, Hatchet, Them (Ils), and Mother of Tears: The Third Mother, among others., where they found an audience. The halcyon days of when films like Saw, Hostel, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake) ruled the Box Office has been replaced with more mainstream fare but no matter what obstacles, horror fans will find their films no matter what format they are released in.
What kind of year would it be without a Saw film, therefore at No. 6 comes Saw V (with $56.7 million). Let’s be honest, the wedding planning is mostly about the bride. You could get all of the above for less than $100!
