Let’s take a look at the highest-grossing horror films of last year to see if we can answer this question. At the bottom of our list at No. 15 is Igor (with $19.5 million), which was a spin-off of the Frankenstein films with the Igor character as the inventor. 2008 was cluttered with animated films as all the major production companies wanted a piece of the pie. This film just ended up getting buried by the Box Office competition and genre fans were not too sure what to make of the kid friendly film since it seemed to be more comedic then frightening.
2008 was not a year for true horror films but a year for the more subtle story driven (and dare I say it) PG-13 horror films. Only a handful of true hard-core horror films were even released theatrically much less made this list as many of the most praised films had limited releases or went straight to DVD. This includes such films as Inside, Frontier(s), Teeth, Let The Right One In, Fido, Diary of the Dead, Hatchet, Them (Ils), and Mother of Tears: The Third Mother, among others., where they found an audience. The halcyon days of when films like Saw, Hostel, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake) ruled the Box Office has been replaced with more mainstream fare but no matter what obstacles, horror fans will find their films no matter what format they are released in.
